Autobiography of James Herring, 1863.

Manuscript of Herring's autobiography, covering his life up till 1810 (written in 1863). He writes of his family background; his boyhood in London and the village of Bentley Green; his uncle, Stephen Holland, who came to New York in 1805 on the ship "Sarah"; Rev. Samuel Peters who was also a passenger; the ship's being stopped en route by both the British and the French; New York at that time; his father's school, the Commercial Academy; of entering the firm Fontaine & Ferris in 1808; his father's opening a brewery in 1809; running away from home and working as a schoolmaster in Wantage, New Jersey; and returning to New York in 1810. Accompanied by notes made ca. 1951 about Herring, including his activity in the Masons, and his family.
